A hamantash is a filled-pocket cookie or pastry recognizable for its triangular shape, usually associated with Haman, the villain in the Purim story. Hamantashen are made with many different fillings, including poppy seed (the oldest and most traditional variety), prunes, chocolate and more.
Hamantashen were originally muntaschen, pockets of poppy seeds, the traditional filling. In Hebrew, hamantashen are known as oznei Haman, Hamans ears, which some may find distasteful although it makes more sense than the Yiddish, both geometrically and poetically.
