Lawsuit Compels Santa Ana Unified School District to Drop Antisemitic Ethnic Studies Curriculum
A lawsuit filed by the Brandeis Center, ADL and the American Jewish Committee in September of 2023, against the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), alleged that the California open meeting laws (“Brown Act”) were violated when SAUSD approved blatanly antisemitic curriculum as part of its Ethnic Studies Courses. Evidence presented in the lawsuit revealed disgusting anti-Jewish emails by Board members and plotting to hide what the Board was preparing to (and did) approve.
On February 19, 2025, SAUSD threw in the towel and agreed to the suing parties terms for settlement. The offensive materials will no longer be taught and a redesigned open process will be used to prepare the curriculum and consider approvals for new ethnic studies courses. This landmark case will serve as a nationwide example and template to deter other school districts from pursuing similarly designed ethnic studies courses. While the settlement was covered in local and national media, it is notable that it was noticed even in Israel, as demonstrated by an article in the Israeli news by Haaretz.
