Anti-Israel Activists Attempt to Pursuade the Segerstrom Center for the Arts to Cancel Tomorrow Night's Performance by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra
We wanted to alert you all that there is an attempt by anti-Israel activists to get the Segerstrom Center For The Arts (SCFTA) to cancel a performance by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra on March 26th. This performance was made possible by the Philharmonic Society and individual sponsors. Unfortunately, they are now being inundated with calls and emails for them to cancel, and even have sent protesters to the home of one of the sponsors. It is ugly and hateful behavior.
To counter this campaign in a positive way, we would like to demonstrate our gratitude and support for the Philharmonic Society and the individual sponsors for bringing the Israeli Philharmonic to Orange County and to the SCFTA and the OC Performing Arts Centers for their decision to proceed with the performance. As I understand, a similar performance in Northridge was canceled due to this kind of pressure. We can do our part by showing our appreciation for those who stand up to hate. And by keeping our statements positive and appreciative, we demonstrate the difference between our approach and theirs.
Here are some suggested actions you can take:
1) Write an email thanking the SCFTA, the OC Performing Arts Center, the Philharmonic Society and the individual sponsors for supporting the Israel Philharmonic and not giving in to the pressure of those who want it cancelled.
Suggested language:
We understand that the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the OC Performing Arts Center has been faced with relentless demands to cancel the performance of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on March 26th.
There are many of us who have long been committed to supporting artistic excellence and believe in the transformative power of music as a way to overcome hatred and suffering.
We understand that this pressure is difficult to navigate and that the decision not to cancel the sold-out performance is not an easy one.
We support and thank you
Known as the "Heartbeat of a Nation," the Israel Philharmonic stands as a powerful symbol of freedom and peace in its role as the cultural emissary of Israel
We are thankful to the Philharmonic Society and the individual sponsors for bringing the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra to Orange County
The orchestra's program of prayer, passion, and remembrance -- featuring pieces inspired by and created for the Jewish community -- is exactly what the Jewish community, and the community at large, need right now
We are thankful that you are providing the light, joy and hope that the Israeli Philharmonic will bring to this entire community
