I wrote this Shema on my first BJE Shabbaton weekend at Camp Hess Kramer in Malibu. During Shabbat we took a walk to the beach. The counselors asked us to sit quietly and listen to all the sounds around us. While I was at the beach I heard: the waves crashing, the wind blowing, the birds chirping, and children laughing. All of these sounds made me think about how God created the world and how God holds everything dear. That’s when I came up with this song.
When I got home on Sunday, I told Ima and Aba about my new song I just wrote. As I sang it to them I added the Shema reminding me that I should always listen to all the sounds in the world around me.
I hope that after services or any time, that you go outside, stop what you’re doing, sit or stand, close your eyes and listen to all the sounds that God holds dear.
That was very special. Thank you.
Yoni! Oh my goodness. So beautiful. Thank you, Jeff and Karen
Sitting in Starbucks sobbing with joy. Sending a big hug to Yoni. You rock.
I’m inspired.
I loved this, Yoni! So special… like you!
