We live in a post-feminist world. For liberal Jews, there is no distinction between the roles of men and women since women now have gained full equality in our religious arena.
Many question whether single-sex auxiliary groups still serve a viable function in our synagogues. When both men and women have so little free discretionary time, do they each want to spend their free time at the synagogue in a single-sex group? The answer is: Yes!
As we have seen, both Sisterhood and Brotherhood have continued to thrive at Temple Beth Sholom. Each of these auxiliaries offers so much to their constituents and to our TBS community at-large. Both always respond with a resounding “Of course!” whenever we request anything of them: to volunteer at an event, to spearhead an activity, to support one of our programs financially. We are so grateful for the gifts of their spirits, hearts, hands, and minds.
We celebrated the women of Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood at the end of January. Tonight, we will pay tribute to and celebrate the men of Temple Beth Sholom Brotherhood with our Brotherhood Shabbat service. In our Reform Movement, the official description of the Men of Reform Judaism is “that place where intellect, vision, matter, and spirit meet. It is this place because our members recognize their obligation to our Jewish heritage and values.”
This is so clearly evident from the breadth and depth of TBS Brotherhood programming and activities: organizing lectures and educational programs, community partnerships with other congregations, social justice activities, social programs and so much more. Brotherhood Shabbat marks a significant moment for us to recognize and honor the vital role that men play in enriching our synagogue life.
This week, we read Parshat Tazria from the book of Leviticus. What does Tazira have to do with Brotherhood Shabbat? At first glance, it appears to deal with infectious skin diseases. However, as we delve more deeply into the teachings of Parshat Tazria, we realize that the Torah places great value on the significance of unity and communal responsibility. This value is inherent in the actions of Brotherhood as well: just as Tazria teaches us about the importance of caring for one another and fostering a sense of solidarity, Brotherhood exemplifies these by their very deeds, actions, and through their dedication to service and support within our congregation.
As we gather to celebrate Brotherhood Shabbat, let us express our gratitude to our TBS Brotherhood for their tireless efforts in enhancing our community. May their steadfast commitment to community, service, education, and compassion continue to guide us on our shared journey.
In the glow of Sabbath light, we gather near,
Brothers in spirit, hearts bound sincere.
Underneath the canopy of stars so bright,
We embrace the sacredness of this night.
In distant lands, our ancestors' call,
Their wisdom echoes, unites us all.
In the rhythm of prayers, ancient and true,
We find strength in bonds, both old and new.
Brotherhood Shabbat, a cherished space,
Where love and kindness find their place.
Hand in hand, we face the trials ahead,
With faith as our guide, no fear to dread.
In the warmth of fellowship, our souls entwine,
A tapestry woven with threads divine.
Bound by heritage, by history's hand,
We stand together, a united band.
So let us raise our voices high,
In songs of joy that pierce the sky.
For in this moment, we truly see,
The beauty of our shared humanity.
On Brotherhood Shabbat, let us renew,
Our commitment to each other true.
For in brotherhood, we find our strength,
In unity, our spirits lengthen and breadth. (Author Unknown)
