L'Shana Tova U'm'tu'kah - Wishing You a Good and Sweet New Year!
I write this on Tuesday – the day immediately preceding Erev Rosh Hashanah. My message for TBS for 5785 was written and ready to go out when we received news that dozens of missiles were launched from Iran and were targeting a large swath of Israel. Simultaneously, there are reports of a terror attack in Tel Aviv/Jaffa. Since October 7, 2023, this has been a year unlike any other. A year where we have been holding our breath waiting for hostages to come home, a year of unprecedented ongoing terrorist warfare against Israel on multiple fronts. Israel did not choose war. Israel has a right to defend itself against terror attacks, missiles, and constant threat of eradication and violence.
We know that these attacks have a profound impact on our community here in the United States and more specifically, in Orange County. This Rosh Hashanah, our thoughts and prayers are with all those in harm’s way. We hope and pray for the safety of all who are impacted. At moments like this, it is vital to strengthen our bonds as a community and stand firm in our support for the people and land of Israel as well as strengthening our bonds with each other here at home. It is important for us to gather together in unity, solidarity, and hope during our High Holy Days to show that “we are here. We will not back down. Am Yisrael Chai - The people of Israel lives!”
As the situation unfolds in the days ahead, I recommend these Israeli news outlets for timely and accurate information (these are the English versions).
Oseh Shalom bimromaiv, Hu ya’aseh shalom aleinu, v’al kol Yisrael, v’al kol yoshvei teiveil, v’imru, amen. May the One Who Creates Peace from the heavens, cause peace to descend on us, on all Israel, and on all the inhabitants of the earth. As we say: Amen.
I wish you a 5785 filled with the blessings of sweetness, hope, joy, health, and most importantly: peace.
L’Shanah Tova U’m’tukah – a good and sweet year!
(Please note: In observance of Rosh Hashanah, there will be no TBS email going out from the office on October 3rd and 4th this week).
May the Door of the synagogue be wide enough To receive all who hunger for love, all who are lonely for friendship.
May the door of this synagogue be narrow enough To shut out pettiness and pride, envy and enmity. May its threshold be no stumbling block to young or straying feet.
May it be too high to admit complacency, Selfishness and harshness.
May this synagogue be, for all who enter, The doorway to a richer and more meaningful life.
